Early Years Initial Teacher Training at Middlesex University, which gave me Early Years Teacher Status at Level 6. Most childminders hold a Level 3. I am not saying that to be sniffy about Level 3, which is a proper qualification. I am saying it because it is the reason I plan and assess the way a nursery does.
I also hold a BSc in Criminology, which comes up less often.
Barnet Early Years Alliance, a federation of three Ofsted Outstanding nursery schools and a children's centre in north London, from 2015 to 2020. I taught two to four year olds and was key person to a group that included several children with SEND, working alongside the SENCO, families and speech and language therapists.
Because in a nursery I had thirty children and twenty minutes of paperwork for each of them. Here I will have a handful, and I can actually do the job. The ratio is the whole point.
Our home in Blofield. A downstairs playroom, a kitchen we cook in, and a garden. Two friendly cats, who are optional. We walk to the village, the park and the woods, and we are ten minutes from the broads.
That is most of my practice in one sentence. The rest is the detail: a routine children can predict, an environment they can get into without asking, adults who name feelings rather than shut them down, and enough time that nobody is being hurried through anything.
I plan from what I see them doing. If a child spends three days carrying sticks around, that is where the week goes. It is not a lack of planning, it is the plan.
